NATURAL DISASTERS
Occurred during the night of 03-04/05/2025 at Nkhatabay Police Lines (Camp) and Kakumbi area within Nkhatabay District.
The following three police officers namely, (1) Chisomo Luphale, D.O.B: 18/06/1995, Village: Chidothi,T/A: Chimaliro District: Thyolo, (2) Blezwick Mizeck, D.O.B: 09/10/1998, Village: Chibanzi, T/A: Msakambewa, District: Dowa and (3). Joseph Chirwa Bango, Village: Bango, T/A: Kaluluma, District: Kasungu all C/o Nkhatabay Police Station, P.O. Box 3, reported that their houses were extensively damaged and washed away by the prolonged heavy rains associated by strong winds.
Brief facts are that during the night of 03-04/05/2025 the district was experiencing heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. As a result, the winds blown off roof tops of the first victim's house some of his household properties have been completely damaged.
The two victims who live outside the Police Camp in a rented semi-detached house located in Kakumbi area their houses have been washed away by the heavy rains. Some of the properties belonging to the third victim such as kitchen utensils, beddings, sofa-set and clothes were found into Nkhata river but in dilapidated state.
Additionally, at around 11:00 hours in the morning the following five (5) victims also reported that their houses have been affected by the heavy rains at Kakumbi area; (1). Juliet Mphande, D.O.B: 08/09/1994, Village: Makoza, T/A: Mkumbira, District: Nkhatabay, (2). Rhoda Mphande, D.O.B: 17/04/1968, Village: Kamoza, T/A: Mkumbira, District: Nkhatabay, (3) Gloria Gama, D.O.B: 01/08/1958, Village: Kamoza, T/A: Mkumbira, District: Nkhatabay, (4). Veronica Kanyinji, D.O.B: 02/03/1997, Village: Kamoza, T/A: Mkumbira, District: Nkhatabay and (5). Carolyne Honde, D.O.B: 17/08/1997, Village: Kamoza, Mkumbira, District: Nkhatabay.
Properties worthy millions have been damaged due to the impact of the rains which the district received.
Some of the victims are currently seeking for a shelter at Nkhatabay Police Station Victim Support Unit (VSU) together with their families. So far Eight (8) houses have been affected by the natural incident. But there are reports that the rains have damaged several houses around Nkhatabay District.
