The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) says it targets to raise K200 million during this year's Red Cross Flag week which runs from May 8-17.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, MRCS director of programmes and development Gloria Kunyenga said they target to utilize the resources as this year's start up to support its response to different forms of disasters, blood donation and first aid service interventions across the country.

Kunyenga challenged the media to play a critical role in raising awareness about the week.

President Lazarus Chakwera who is also MRCS patron is expected to launch the week which will be observed under the theme "on the side of humanity", on Thursday.

During, last year's flag week, MRCS collected K56 million which was used to reach out to people who were affected by various forms of disasters.
