HEAVY RAINS WARNING FROM 07TH JANUARY TO 9TH JANUARY 2026.

DCCMS is issuing a warning of heavy rainfall expected to affect lakeshore areas and several parts of the country. The adverse weather, characterized by intense downpours accompanied by strong winds and frequent lightning is likely impact Nkhotakota, Salima, parts of Mzimba, Kasungu, Nkhata Bay, Dowa Mchinji, and Ntchisi which are failing under category 10 alerts. Mzuzu, Likoma, Machinga, Mangochi, parts of Zomba, and Balaka which are under falling under category 6 while the remaining districts are under category 5 of warnings. These risky conditions are due to the low-pressure system which is in the Mozambique channel and currently enhancing Congo air mass but expected to pass through Malawi on Wednesday.

DCCMS wishes also to inform Malawians that the Tropical Storm GRANT which was coming from Australia side has now weakened and is moving towards Madagascar. With the projected path and intensity, GRANT has no direct impact over Malawi.
