Update on heavy rainfall warning issued 16.03.2026
The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services issued a heavy rainfall warning on 16 March 2026, covering the period from 17 to 19 March 2026. The warning indicates that lakeshore areas, the Southern Region, and parts of the central region including districts such as Nkhotakota, Salima, Blantyre, Thyolo, Chiradzulu, Mulanje, Dedza, and Ntcheu are expected to experience intense rainfall due to a low-pressure system over Malawi. It has been reported that this situation poses significant risks of flooding and landslides, with several areas classified under high-risk categories according to the provided risk map. Furthermore, the public has been advised to exercise extreme caution by avoiding crossing flooded rivers, relocating from flood-prone areas to higher ground, refraining from sheltering under trees or weak structures, and staying indoors during storms.
