A second-year Bachelor of Science in Geography student at the University of Malawi (Unima) has developed an app that detects weather anywhere in the world within five minutes.
Fortune Kamphinda who is based in Lilongwe designed the app to combine geography with modern technology.
The system gives instant data on rainfall, temperature, clouds, pressure, humidity, wind, and day-night conditions, all displayed through interactive maps, satellite imagery, and elevation models.
The app also features six key functions, including Get Weather, 5-Day Forecast, View Map, Dashboard, and Forecast Chart.
It also has room to detect unusually high rainfall that may cause flooding in Malawi and other countries, issuing automatic audio and text alerts in English and Chichewa.
Using data from NASA, Google Satellite, ESRI, OpenWeatherMap, and others, the tool can as well track global cyclones.
