Effect of Current Heavy Rain
The Malawi Engineering Institution has called for a review of bridge design, construction management, and environmental oversight after heavy rains and floods caused widespread damage to roads and bridges.
Its CEO, Engineer Arthur Wengawenga, says the extreme weather exposed the limits of current infrastructure.
“Several bridges could not handle the volume of water, leading to significant destruction,” Wengawenga explained.
He warned that climate change is increasing rainfall intensity, noting that Kasungu Station may have recorded such heavy rainfall for the first time in years.
Wengawenga has also blamed environmental degradation upstream, including deforestation, which worsens runoff and amplifies flood damage to roads and bridges.
